The 2026/27 season is going to feel like it’s starting late, because it is. The 2026 World Cup doesn’t wrap up until 19 July, so every major European league pushed its opening weekend back by about a week to give players a proper break before diving straight into a full season. If you’re already counting down the days, here’s exactly when each of the top five leagues kicks off:

Premier League (England): Friday 21 August 2026

La Liga (Spain): weekend of 14–16 August 2026

Serie A (Italy): weekend of 22–23 August 2026

Bundesliga (Germany): Friday 28 August 2026

Ligue 1 (France): weekend of 21–23 August 2026

Below is a closer look at each league, what to expect on opening weekend, and everything happening in the weeks before a ball is even kicked — because for most fans, the season doesn’t really begin on matchday one. It begins the moment the transfer rumours start.

Why every league is starting later this year

Normally you’d expect the Premier League and its European rivals to get going on the first or second weekend of August. Not this year. The 2026 World Cup — spread across the United States, Mexico and Canada — doesn’t wrap up until 19 July, weeks later than usual, and with 48 teams involved for the first time, there are simply more players heading home late and running on empty. Every top domestic league pushed its start back by about a week in response, giving squads a bit more time to recover before the season proper kicks in.

Premier League: Friday 21 August 2026

Arsenal, last season’s champions, get the honour of opening the show — hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates on Friday 21 August in the traditional Friday-night curtain-raiser. The rest of the opening round follows across the weekend. From there it’s 38 matchweeks until the finish line on Sunday 30 May 2027, when — as always — every final-day fixture kicks off at exactly the same time.
